Thomas Cook committed to "environmentally efficient" airline

Thomas Cook Airlines has become the first UK carrier to achieve an international environmental standard.

The ISO 14001 accreditation means the airline joins major airlines including Lufthansa and KLM that have proved their commitment to a green agenda.

Frank Pullman, managing director of Thomas Cook Airlines, said: ‘To be the first airline in the UK to achieve the ISO 14001 standard is a huge achievement for Thomas Cook Airlines.

'We're absolutely committed to operating a responsible and environmentally efficient airline and this standard will help us to develop our environmental strategy policies even further.'

To gain the standard, the airline introduced an environmental management system to identify, control and improve its environmental impact and performance.

This included onboard recycling programmes, newly-designed aircraft wings that are more fuel-efficient and extensive recycling and energy reduction schemes.

Thomas Cook Airlines said that as a result it had recycled more than 3,500 kg of paper (94 trees), over 500 kg of plastic (c21,000 plastic bottles) and nearly 200 kg of metal (c12,000 drink cans) since 2009.

The carrier operates a fleet of 44 aircraft from 19 UK airports.
